The Merrick Public Library is a department in the Town of Brookfield, governed by a six-member Board of Library Trustees, who are elected for staggered three-year terms of office.  The Trustees govern under Chapter 78, Sections 10 and 11 of the Massachusetts General Laws, having legal responsibility for the provision of library services, custody of library property, appointment of the library director, expenditure of funds, and determination of library policy. A primary function of this board is to ensure library services effectively meet community needs.

The Board of Library Trustees and the Brookfield Historical Commission seek to acquire an adjacent property for necessary office, meeting, and program space, as well as vital storage and display space for historic maps, artifacts, books, and other memorabilia. The goal for the future is the establishment of a local historical museum, open to the public.

Monthly Trustees meetings are held at the Library, and are open to the public.
